PLOT SYNOPSIS for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

Act One

“Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene . . . “ so starts Shakespeare’s famous drama of love and conflict. The Montagues and Capulets have been fighting for so long they can’t remember the reason why. The play opens in a marketplace, where the servants from both households are fighting. Romeo, a pacifist, is not present — he is writing poetry to his love, Rosaline. The Princess arrives and tells everyone they have to stay away from each other.

The scene shifts to Lord Capulet’s house where he’s preparing for a party. He’s talking to Paris, who wants to marry Juliet, Lord Capulet’s daughter. Juliet is only 13, and Lord Capulet thinks she’s a little young to be married. Lady Capulet thinks she’s old enough, as she got married when she was Juliet’s age. The feast starts, and Romeo, going against the Princess’ rules, shows up with his friends. He thinks he will see Rosaline there, but instead he falls in love with Juliet. Juliet also has eyes for Romeo, and could care less for Paris. Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, sees Romeo at the party, and tries to start a fight, but Lord Capulet moves him quickly away from the party.

After the party, Romeo goes and visits Juliet on her balcony. They realize they love each other and want to get married, even though their parents hate each other. Romeo goes to visit the Prioress and sets a time to get married for the following day. He tells Juliet’s nurse of his plans. Romeo and Juliet get married. Meanwhile, Tybalt is still looking to fight Romeo. He picks a fight with Romeo’s friend Mercutio. Mercutio gets killed under Romeo’s arm. Romeo picks up Mercutio’s sword and kills Tybalt. He flees to another city, Mantua.

Act II

Juliet is being forced to marry Paris, even though she’s already married to Romeo. She goes to the Prioress for a solution. The Prioress prescribes a potion that will make Juliet appear dead. Juliet will be placed in the vault, and the Prioress will send a letter to Romeo telling him that Juliet is just resting; appearing dead. Juliet will wake up when Romeo comes back from Mantua and then they can run off together. Romeo never gets the letter from the Prioress, he gets a message from his friend Balthasar instead. Balthasar tells Romeo he saw Juliet buried in the Capulet tomb. Romeo thinks Juliet is dead.

Romeo gets poison from an apothecary and goes to Juliet’s tomb. There he sees Paris and they fight. Then he sees Juliet and . . .
